How to Get the Best Business Portrait: A Guide for Colleagues.

Let’s be honest - most people don’t like having their picture taken. In fact, during recent shoots for colleague profile pictures, I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard, “I hate having my photo taken!” But here’s the thing - by the end of their session, every single person left with at least one image they were happy with. How? Because a good business portrait session isn’t just about taking a photo, it’s about making the experience as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Using my own knowledge and feelings, because I too don't like having my picture taken, I want to help every person I photograph to relax and enjoy having their picture taken and have the best experience whilst minimising the awkward feeling.

If you’re about to have your colleague profile picture taken and are feeling a little uneasy, here are a few tips to help you get the best possible image with minimal stress.

1. Wear What Makes You Feel Comfortable and Confident

Your business portrait should represent you in a professional but authentic way. Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that won’t distract from your face. Avoid logos or very bright colors unless they are part of your company’s branding. A well-fitted outfit that makes you feel confident will always photograph better than something you’re uncomfortable in.

2. Relax - You’re in Safe Hands

A big part of my job is making sure you feel at ease in front of the camera. There’s no pressure, no rush - we’ll take a few shots, review them together, and tweak as needed. That’s why I use an iPad for instant image review, so you can see your pictures straight away and pick the one that feels right for you.

3. Think About Your Expression

A natural, approachable expression works best for most professional colleague profile pictures. You don’t need to force a big smile - just think about how you’d look if you were introducing yourself to a new colleague. If you feel unsure, we can take a few variations and see which one suits you best.

4. Find Your Best Angle

Everyone has a ‘good side,’ even if they don’t think they do! Small adjustments in head position or posture can make a big difference. I’ll guide you through small changes to get the most flattering and natural shot.

5. Trust the Process

If you’re nervous about having your picture taken, know that you’re not alone. But after years of photographing people, I can confidently say that everyone is photogenic - it’s just about creating the right environment to bring out your best. My goal isn’t just to take a picture; it’s to make sure you walk away with an image you’re happy with.
